Advising a Photographer about which pictures you want.

Often times when you are looking for a photographer to take pictures at your wedding, you have an idea of what you want. In the following post, I will give you the tools to find pictures similar to the ones you want, and how to discuss these looks with your photographer.

Any photographer worth his salt can take criticism, and advice on what type of photos that you are wanting and paying him to take. The best way to approach a photographer is to openly share a few images that you have seen that you would like him to use as a reference. While the images may not come out the same, the photographer should be able to change his personal style to fit your needs. After all, you are the one paying his bills, and he is there to service you.

The best way to show him the type of pictures you want, whether they are photo journalistic, action, candid, or portrait types of shots. Anything you think you’ll like, you can find them on Flickr , (The link above goes straight to the wedding photo section.) Choose a good 5 to 10 images, and share them with your photographer. Don’t just try to describe them, because there may be aspects of the image that you like, but don’t catch. A photographer has been trained to notice all aspects of an image, and the underlying reasons that they evoke certain emotions.

If you have any further suggestions feel free to comment below. Anything that you used while talking to your photographer, can help other photogs, and clients alike.

  1. My best advice would be to make a decision based on their portfolio… If they’ve shown no capability at being a photojournalist, don’t ask them to do a photojournalistic style… It could be an experiment on your dime.
Go with a style you like already, that you’ve seen demonstrated in their work :)

  2. Some photographers have been around the block and can do different styles for different occasions. Personally, if you want me up in your face for a great shot I’ll be there, but if you want a more behind the scenes photographer who just catches the little things I can do that as well. Preferences do come into play…. as I’m more of the later naturally. I can and do have fun with the more close up, beauty shots when the need arises.

  3. Exceptional webpage. My class mates and I were just discussing this the other night. Also your webpage looks great on my old laptop. Now thats uncommon. Nice work.
